NY Oversize & Overweight Permits
New York has strict travel time restrictions for oversized loads, especially near major cities and during holidays. Let our experts handle that.
- Route Accuracy: State-approved routes for oversized cargo
- Fast Turnaround: We work directly with NY DOT on specialized hauling permits
- Divisible vs. Non-Divisible: Correct permit type filed for your load classification
Non-Divisible Load
A single object or combined load that cannot be separated without hours of work, specialized equipment, or damaging the cargo.
Note: If the load cannot be broken down within 8 hours of labor or without destroying its value, it is non-divisible.
Divisible Load
Cargo of multiple items separable into smaller units without damage or specialized equipment.
Note: If weight or size can be reduced by unloading a portion, the load is divisible.
Why This Classification Matters
NYSDOT maintains separate permit categories for each load type. A single solid unit requires a Special Hauling Permit (non-divisible); multiple separable items need a Divisible Load Overweight Permit. State rules forbid overweight permits when cargo can reasonably be reduced to legal dimensions — misclassification leads to fines and forced offloading.

A permit is not a 24/7 green light. NY enforces curfews by day, time, and region.
Standard NY Travel Schedule
| Day | Travel | Restrictions |
|---|---|---|
| Mon – Fri | ✅ Full day | No movement 7–9 AM & 4–6 PM in major cities (Buffalo, Albany, etc.) |
| Saturday | ⚠️ Half day | Stop by 12:00 PM for loads over 12' wide or 85' long |
| Sunday | ⛔ No travel | Highways closed to permitted oversize/overweight loads |
| NYC & Long Island | 🌙 Night only | Typically 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM only |
| Major holidays | ⛔ No travel | Restrictions often start 12:00 PM the day before |
Important: Permits are void during heavy snow, ice, or high winds — park safely when visibility is low. Border crossings (e.g. Peace Bridge) may impose temporary bans or restrictions during construction.
