What is the NY HUT?
The New York Highway Use Tax (HUT) is a weight-distance tax on motor carriers operating certain trucks on New York public highways. It is based on miles traveled in the state and the weight of the vehicle.
Who needs to register for NY HUT?
Motor carriers operating trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 18,000 pounds or more on New York State public highways must have a HUT credential. This includes New York-based, out-of-state, and Canadian carriers.
When does my NY HUT registration expire?
New York HUT operates on a 3-year cycle. We are currently in Series 25, which began on January 1, 2025 and is valid through December 31, 2027.
I already have an IFTA license; do I still need a NY HUT permit?
Yes. IFTA covers fuel taxes across member jurisdictions. New York still charges Highway Use Tax based on weight and mileage. IFTA does not replace HUT.
What happens if I forgot to renew my HUT registration on time?
An expired registration can lead to fines, interest, or a vehicle being placed out of service. Once you work with us, we keep your contact details on file and send renewal reminders.
Do you also provide tax filing services?
We do not provide direct quarterly tax filing. We can explain the requirements so you can file correctly and avoid penalties.
How often do I need to file NY HUT tax returns?
Returns are typically filed quarterly. You must still file even if you drove zero New York miles that quarter. Missing filings can suspend your credentials.
How do I get a 72-hour temporary HUT permit?
Order online with your USDOT, EIN, legal name, and vehicle details. Standard processing is $88 (2–3 business days). Expedited processing is $111 for same-day issuance when submitted before 12:00 PM.
What can I order on this website?
We process two NY HUT products online: the temporary 72-hour HUT permit and the HUT sticker (registration/decal). We do not sell UCR, fuel, trip, or oversize permits on this site.
How do I get a HUT sticker?
Order online, add each vehicle over 18,000 lbs GVW, and pay the tiered sticker fee. We open or update the HUT account and request the state decal for mail delivery.
